STUDENTS from a variety of backgrounds can take a quicker path into accounting through a new postgraduate degree.
The University of Western Sydney is offering a new master of vocational accounting for students holding any undergraduate degree. It meets the pre-admission requirements for accreditation by CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA). It is also recognised by the National Institute of Accountants (NIA). Program head Derek Gleeson says the new course includes specific units designed to enhance job-seeking, research, and oral and written presentation skills of graduates. "These units have been developed in response to feedback from employers," he says.Offered at the university's Parramatta campus, the master's takes two years full-time or four years part-time. Those seeking a career in financial planning could find a head start in Kaplan Professional's graduate diploma of applied finance. Students who complete the graduate diploma and take a financial planning major will be exempted from three out of the five certified financial planner certification subjects required by the Financial Planners Association.To become fully qualified with the Financial Planners Association, students will be required to complete an ethics professionalism and compliance course, and to undertake a certification assessment.Warren Jacobson, Kaplan Professional chief executive, says the diploma is part of a suite of postgraduate offerings that were developed in collaboration with industry experts, employers, students and academic staff from other institutions.
