THREE internships during her bachelor's degree in communication studies clinched the decision for Melanie Jeffress (right) to become a consumer-lifestyle public relations consultant.

Just two weeks after finishing her degree at the University of Western Sydney, she's already got her first job interview.

During that work experience, Jeffress assisted in writing media releases and organising events. "I loved it," she says. "I felt I was really learning stuff I could never get in the classroom and putting the theory into practice."

Many of the lecturers are practising professionals or have industry experience.

The course structure ensured that Jeffress did a lot of group and team work.

"In the PR world you rarely work alone - even if you have your own business, you still work with the client - so it was great preparation to develop communication skills for real work," Jeffress says.
