NIAV OWENS, 22, is undertaking a double degree (Communications/Law) at the University of Newcastle. This year, she was one of 40 students selected to work for the Olympic News Service at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

"I wasn't completely sure what I wanted to do professionally when I finished my HSC, so I chose what I hope is a really versatile degree that will leave me with more options in the future," Owens says of her studies, which will be completed in 2010.

After that, Owens, who works part-time at Newcastle's ABC Radio, says she would love a career in sports media.

"I can think of nothing better than spending my weekends at the SCG, or watching the Wallabies play, or going to an NRL game - imagine being paid to do those things for a living," she says. "So I guess, ultimately, I would love to work for ABC Grandstand Sport."

Owens's opportunity to travel to the Beijing Olympics allowed her to experience life as a sports reporter.

The experience cemented her professional vision, making her more determined to excel in her studies and, ultimately, her chosen field.

"Being a part of the Beijing Olympic Games just made me realise that I never want to miss another one," she says.
